- Apply for the Black Family Fellowship. Application deadline for Harvard Business School students is April 15, 2022.
Applicants must submit:
- A biographical profile, not to exceed 150 words;
- A document containing written responses to two essay prompts related to their experience, education, leadership capacity, and the fellowship;
- Two letters of recommendation.
Interviews: Finalists for the Black Family Fellowship will be interviewed in Spring 2022 by members of the Black Family Fellowship selection committee.

Program Information
WHAT WE OFFER
The fellowship provides:
- Vital support (tuition and stipend) to support a master’s degree program at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School and/or Harvard Law School
- A comprehensive co-curricular program to augment your leadership development
- A network of exceptional peers and mentors who will enhance your ability to impact the communities you serve
THE AWARD
The Black Family Fellowship will be provided with vital tuition support for up to 25 students annually at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Harvard Law School who are veterans of the United States armed forces or active duty military students serving in the United States.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants will be considered based on their potential to lead change for the common good. Black Family Fellows are outstanding emerging leaders with the capacity to work across sectors. Special emphasis is placed on character development and ethical leadership.
- The fellowship is open to admitted degree program students at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Harvard Law School who are veterans of the United States armed forces or active duty military students serving the United States.
- At Harvard Kennedy School, the fellowship is awarded upon admission to the School.
- At Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, the fellowship is awarded to both newly-admitted and current MBA or JD candidates.
- Candidates who are enrolled, or plan to enroll, in joint or concurrent degree programs at Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, or Harvard Law School, are also eligible to apply.
THE FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE
Black Family Fellows will participate in a unique leadership development program administered by the Center for Public Leadership designed to cultivate core competencies that are central to public leadership, including promoting strong moral character and ethics; mastering the arts of persuasion and negotiation; leading effective teams and organizations; and fostering sound decision-making.
Fellows will participate in the following programming:
- Hands-on experiential learning opportunities including an Outward Bound experience;
- A welcome retreat with the full community of CPL Fellows;
- Engagement with prominent leaders from the military, as well as the business, government, and non-profit sectors, sharpening fellows’ understanding of how they can navigate the civilian world;
- A leadership discussion series focused on bridging the civilian military divide with leadership development opportunities for veterans who are working to transition from military to civilian leadership;
- A field experience trip focused on a particular policy issue, designed to strengthen Black Family Fellows’ cross-sector leadership ability through engagement with leaders and organizations across the public, private, and civil society sectors;
- Service learning opportunities: Through the Center for Public Leadership’s Veteran’s Impact Initiative, field experience trips and programming across Harvard, Black Family Fellows will teach and coach civilian students to serve and connect with veterans throughout the city of Boston.

Being a CPL fellow carries with it certain responsibilities including maintenance of good academic standing as required by your degree program; attendance at all fellowship programming for the entire duration of the fellowship; leading program sessions and service activities including a field experience trip; and responsible conduct in representing CPL and Harvard University.
